Someone has already spent over R280,000 on a single purchase on Black Friday

Black Friday data from payment gateway PayFast shows that one South African shopper has already spent over R284,625 in a single online purchase.

PayFast has launched its annual Black Friday and Cyber Monday dashboard, which shows live tracking of purchases being made on the massive sales day.

According to PayFast, the average online basket value is R1,322 so far, with the most transactions by one online shopper currently sitting at 32, with a total payment value of R21,962.

Consumers were shopping earlier than usual this year, compared to last year (09h00 to 10h00), with 06h00 to 08h00 seeing the biggest increases.

“South Africans are making the most of Black Friday deals ahead of the festive season. Despite the increased cost of living – or because of it – consumers aren’t holding back on spending their money this year,” said Brendon Williamson, managing director at PayFast.

While some consumers are going for big-ticket wish list items, like TVs and appliances, others are stocking up on basic necessities for the next few months. This accounts for the difference in basket sizes and overall purchases, he said.

The PayFast Black Friday dashboard shows the top payment methods and transaction statistics for each province, with Gauteng leading the way, followed by KwaZulu Natal, and then the Western Cape coming in at third place.

Individual transactions are tracked in real-time, while Payfast also keeps tabs on whether shoppers use mobile or desktop purchases.

In the morning, mobile devices accounted for 74% of sales; however, by noon, this dropped to 61% as people shifted their shopping to their desktops in the late morning.
