A prominent figure in the Eastern Cape has been mercilessly gunned down alongside his secretary this week, and police have launched a manhunt to find the culprits in this politically-charged case. Ward 43 councillor Andile Andries and branch secretary Lubabalo Keso were allegedly shot and killed by the occupants of a taxi.
‘Political assassination’ leaves Eastern Cape cops scrambling
The slain pair, recently named by SAPS, were met by a hail of bullets when leaving a house in KwaNobuhle. This settlement is officially the largest township on the outskirts of Kariega – and sits just off the R334 near Gqeberha.
The two men were approached by a minibus taxi, before gunshots were filed indiscriminately. The Quantum vehicle then drove off immediately, once both men had collapsed to the floor. The councillor and his secretary were pronounced dead at the scene, leaving first responders unable to perform life-saving procedures.

In an official statement issued yesterday, SAPS confirmed that separate murder cases have been registered. However, the manhunt has not yet yielded any early results, as no arrests have been made at this point.
“Detectives have launched a manhunt for the alleged murderers of a Councillor together with his Secretary on Monday 02 May 2022 at about 12:00 midday, at KwaNobuhle. According to the report; the 45-year-old Councillor was coming out of his house together with the 41-year-old male secretary at the time of the incident.”
“It is further alleged that the Quantum minibus drove towards them and began firing several shots thereby killing them at the scene. The Quantum vehicle sped off after the incident. The circumstances surrounding the incident are currently under investigation. Murder cases have been registered and no arrest made at this stage.”
