Stormers secure URC semi-final spot after outplaying Bulls

CAPE TOWN – The Stormers secured a home URC semi-final with a 33-21 victory over the Bulls in front of a record crowd at the DHL Stadium in Cape Town on Saturday.

A new attendance record was set for the competition after more than 44,000 supporters flocked to the Greenpoint venue to witness a 6th win in a row for the defending champions against Jake White and the Bulls.

The Cape side dominated the first 5 minutes of the quarterfinal encounter and made their relentless pressure count.

Hacjivah Dayimani found space out wide and dotted down in the 9th minute.

The outstanding Stormers forward sucked in the Bulls defenders and Manie Libbok made no mistake to make it 7-0.

Libbok produced a faultless performance on the afternoon. He controlled the game well with his distribution and incisive running complimented by his kicking.

The flyhalf converted a penalty soon after Leolin Zas dotted down in the corner after a free flowing move to make it 17-0.

The Stormers forwards were tireless and outplayed the Pretoria outfit.

The Bulls finally on the board on the stroke of half time as Cyle Brink scored when he returned to the field from a yellow card to send the teams to the halftime break with the score at 17-7.

The home team started the second period in the same manner as the first. Libbok converted a penalty in the 43rd before Angelo David’s crossed the whitewash 5 minutes later to make it 27-7

Bulls scrum half Embrose Papier scrambled past defenders and got over the line to score. At 27-14 and with 20 minutes to play, the Bulls still had hopes of making a comeback. But Libbok extinguished any chance of that happening with 2 more penalties to make it 33-14

Replacement hooker Bismarck du Plessis scored a consolation try with the last movement of the game as it finished 33-21.

The Stormers will host Irish club Connacht in next week’s semi-final.
