Panyaza Lesufi to lead ANC in Gauteng after highly contested race

Gauteng Education MEC, Panyaza Lesufi has been elected as the African National Congress (ANC) Chairperson in the province.

The ANC in Gauteng held its elective conference in Benoni over the weekend which was marred by delays over credentials. An urgent interdict was also filed by an ANC member in Ekurhuleni (which has been the case in other conferences) however, it was dismissed and the conference went ahead.


The results were announced early on Monday. Lesufi was up against Lebogang Maile who is the COGTA MEC in the province and won by a slim margin of 32 votes.

  • Provincial Chairperson – Panyaza Lesufi got 575 votes while Lebogang Maile got 543 votes.
  • Provincial Deputy Chairperson – Mzi Khumalo got 522 while Nomantu Nkomo Ralehoko won with 593 votes.
  • Provincial Secretary – Thulani Kunene had 525 votes, Jacob Khawe only 56, while former TS Records owner Thembinkosi TK Nciza bagged 534 votes.
  • Provincial Deputy Secretary – Gauteng Health MEC, Dr Nomathemba Mokgethi got 552 votes while Tasneem Motara secured the win with 557 votes.
  • Provincial Treasurer – Paul Mojapelo obtained 555, with Morakane Mosupye clinching the win with 556 votes.

Maile was seen congratulating Lesufi after his win. “Congratulations cde Panyaza Lesufi on your elections as a Provincial Chairperson of Gauteng, all the best my brother. You ran a clean campaign befitting of a leader of our movement. We all rally behind the elected leadership as work towards ANC victory in 2024,” Maile also tweeted.
