Two injured as speeding car plough into crowd during illegal street race

Two vehicles collided at high speed before one left the road and ploughed into a crowd of onlookers during an alleged illegal street race. This happened in Springfield Park.

THE ACCIDENT HAPPENED JUST BEFORE MIDNIGHT

According to Emer-G-Med spokesperson Kyle van Reenen, the accident happened just before midnight on Saturday evening.

“Paramedics together with Netcare911 responded to the intersection of Umgeni Road and Intersite Avenue just before midnight to reports of a serious motor vehicle collision,” he said.

TWO VEHICLES HAD COLLIDED AT HIGH SPEED

On arrival on the scene, paramedics found two vehicles that collided at ‘high speed and high impact’.

“One of the vehicles left the roadway and ploughed into a crowd of people.”

He said two people were left injured, one critically.

TWO PEOPLE WERE INJURED IN THE ACCIDENT

They were treated and stabilized on the scene before being taken to a nearby hospital for further care.

“It is alleged that the incident is related to illegal Street racing activities in the area; however, this is speculative and will form the subject of a South African Police Services investigation.”

This area is allegedly known for illegal street racing activities. In 2019 the eThekwini metro police swooped on a crowd at an illegal weekend drag-racing event in Springfield Park.

SPRINGFIELD KNOWN FOR ILLEGAL STREET RACING

They issued 58 fines for infringements ranging from unroadworthy and unlicensed vehicles to driving without a licence.

According to a report by IOL eThekwini metro police spokesperson Senior Superintendent Parboo Sewpersad said the police issued the fines in less than an hour during “operation disruption” along the M19 and Umgeni Road in Springfield Park.

He said a large crowd and some 200 vehicles had gathered at midnight.
