Three people drown in different Nongoma rivers on the same day

Two schoolchildren and a 21-year-old man drowned in Nongoma, KwaZulu-Natal on Tuesday, 15 November.

The KZN Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) said two pupils from Bombolo Primary School swam in the Msunduze after school before they encountered difficulties and tragically drowned.

The boys were aged 11 and 12.

On the same day, in Ward 2 of the Nongoma Local Municipality, a 21-year-old man drowned as he tried to cross the eMona River. The department offered its condolences to the bereaved families and called for communities to be cautious around large bodies of water.

The department appealed to teachers and parents to inform children about the dangers of swimming in rivers and other undesignated areas.

“The Provincial Disaster Management Centre continues to work closely with all disaster management teams to ensure that adequate measures are taken to warn communities about the dangers posed by large bodies of water, more especially with the spring in full swing,” said KZN COGTA spokesperson, Senzo Mzila.
